With a degree in biology, São Paulo-based photographer Sidney Cardoso combines his scientific knowledge, photographic technique, and artistic sensibility to reveal what others might overlook in the natural world. His work often focuses on the tiny details of small organisms, in particular many species of South American native bees. Through his images, Cardoso hopes that people will gain a greater appreciation for bees and the roles they play in the environment, including human communities, and a better understanding of how we can better protect and ultimately benefit from these organisms in the future.
Indigenous communities in South America are raising native bees to help protect the insects, conserve forests, and strengthen their own cultural ties to the ecosystem.
